Our story started decades ago, with a burning desire to help animals in need, with baby sparrows being hand fed in the kitchen, with robins being taught to fly in the bedroom, with neighbor's children bringing all kinds of hurt animals in exchange for marbles. The final push came in the spring of 2001. On our way home from an outing, we noticed a beautiful Snowy Owl in a nearby field. Although the owl was hopping around, it never tried to take off into the air, and this made us suspicious that it was injured in some way. We determinedly tromped over barbed wire fences, through the field, following this very quickly hopping owl, until we managed to grab it and secure it under a towel. We contacted a wildlife rehabilitation center, brought the owl in, and were told that it only had one wing, but that the injury likely occured many months ago and that it was well healed. Other than the owl was very thin from eating soley the grasshoppers it could catch, it was in fine shape, a beautiful lady! Unfortunately, due to lack of space at the center for a permanent resident, the owl was put down. It was then that we truly understood the need for more facilities willing to take in injured animals, and because of government regulations, one could not simply take these animals in to care for them. We were determined to do something, and so entered the extremely long and often frustrating journey to obtain our license. We have never forgotten the defiant way the owl perched, the sharp clicking of its beak as it bravely warned, the deep orange stare of its huge eyes, as it seemed to be communicating with us, a primal connection from one species to another.

In 2003, we were licensed as a wildlife rehabilitation facility. We bring 30 years of experience with animals to this endeavor. Although we would like to take in every animal in need, we are best equipped to handle birds of all types, and small mammals. Our main goals are to protect, defend, rehabilitate, and release to the wild. Achieving these goals is a monumental task, involving many hours of work. Sometimes, all is for nought and we have to come to terms with outcomes that are not so pleasant. But for the most part, we experience great satisfaction when a life can be returned to its own environment. Our greatest joy is to see a wild thing--wild and strong again.

If you see a wild animal in need, please don't hesitate to give us a call. We are located in the area between Calgary and Red Deer, Alberta, and would be more than happy to aid in a rescue.

Taz

This is our guardian Great Pyrenees boy Taz. He is the sweetest and gentlest fellow one can imagine, and he is our rock when it comes to keeping our wildlife safe from marauding coyotes, foxes and skunks. We couldn't do it without him!
