THE MAINE COON CAT

The Maine Coon breed is the only natural domestic North American breed of cat.The origin of this cat is in the New England area, although its genetic background is not known. It has been speculated that long haired cats crossing the ocean on ships from Europe or Scandinavia escaped into North America, and bred with the local wild cats of the area, to become the first Maine Coons. However, these are only speculations, and no one will ever know their true beginnings. Certainly, their coats are long, silky, and thick, pointing to survival in a harsh climate. They have fur between the pads of the feet, as well as in the ears, to provide ease of movement through snow, and to keep frostbite at bay. Their tails are hugely plumed and long, causing many people to remark that this is a tail with a cat attached. Certainly, Maine Coons proudly carry their tails aloft.

These beautiful cats are referred to as the "Gentle Giants" of the cat fancy. With sweet personalities, they love to be around people, and get along with other animals equally well. New situations are approached with caution and curiosity, not with agressiveness. Although they are not lap cats and often do not enjoy being picked up, they do love to constantly interact with people through play and cuddling. You can usually find a Maine Coon lying as close as possible beside a person. They have a definite affinity for water, often playing in their water bowls, trying to retrieve objects that they themselves have placed there. They are very dextrous with their paws, using them much like hands, to pickup food, or other objects. Many a Maine Coon has been known to retrieve small balls of paper, seeming to enjoy the interraction with their owners. They are very loyal and usually attach themselves closely to one person or family. Maine Coons are a very large breed of cat, males often reaching sizes of 16 to 20 pounds. Their large size only adds to their charm. If a 20 pound companion is what you are looking for, the Maine Coon is just what you need!
