Dominique (Watch Status)

Dominiques are the oldest American breed of chicken. Although it is not known exactly where they originated, it is most likely that a lot of European breeds were used in developing the Dominique. Dominiques are striking, with their bands of black and white, also known as the cuckoo pattern. It is thought that this pattern helps to make the less conspicious to predators. They have a rosecomb with a short spike curving upwards towards the back, and this distinguishes them from the Plymouth Rock, which have a single comb. This lower comb also helps the Dominique in cold weather, and keeps them from freezing their combs. They are a medium to large bird, and lay many medium sized brown eggs. Their temperament is calm and friendly, and they are great foragers.
